The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was first held in 1938 by Clarence "Pappy" Hoel, who was a local motorcycle dealer and one of the founding members of the Jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Club. Initially, the rally was a small gathering of motorcycle riders who participated in races and other events.
